Winter landscape by Sofia Björkman
The black winter pattern of bare branches, the tracks of sledges in the snow, the feet of birds tracing dotted trajectories through the untouched snow, the black crevasses caused by the melting, the patterns of the ice on the window with the darkness of the morning behind it, the patterns we melted in school during the first break, to finally wake up, as ice burned the fingers. The trees again, sometimes bare, sometimes heavy with snow. Winter is a graphic professional – white and black, black and white, grey and white.
Sofia Björkman’s (Sweden) jewellery work is about the winter landscape, about cold and rush, and every time I look at her three-dimensional works, works that balance between jewellery and openwork sculpture, I think of Malte Laurids Brigge, who as a child used to roll lace with his mother. And then our eyes would get covered in frost,” Rilke concludes the story of those lace pieces. On the first day of winter, my eyes glaze over at the beauty of Sofia Björkman’s jewellery.

The work in the exhibition was made after a conversation on a frosty winter day. Two people in a certain place talked about what they saw. It is colors, shapes, emotions and thoughts. What is a landscape today? How do we capture it in image and in form? The pieces are brooches but can also be seen as hybrids between jewelry art, landscape paintings, drawings and sculptures.
